Chapter 17 teaser - Calli

“I have a surprise for you.” Kai purs.

“And what would that be?” I ask, my interest peaked.

“Pack a small bag and you will see.”

“You know, Cade will kill you if you take me without permission, right?”

“Let me handle him. Tonight’s about you.” he says gently kissing my forehead.

“Now go pack.” He smacks me on my ass as I walk away to do as I’m told.

I might catch a lot of shit for this, but it sounds like fun.

I make my way upstairs. Something is building beneath my skin. I know this is wrong, but I’m excited—too excited. What I’m doing is technically wrong. But I trust him. I know Kai would never do anything to hurt me. I could probably leave a note for Cade. That might actually be best. I don’t want him thinking that I decided to run away.

Especially not now.

Jack stands in my doorway, leaning against the frame like he owns it. I approach him and look up.

“You’re in my way…”

“You sure this is such a good idea?”

I shove past him and he follows me into the room. “That’s none of your business. I’m a grown woman who can make my own decisions.” I turn toward him as I notice him closing the door before facing me fully.

“How do you even know?”

He shrugs. “I know things.” He moves closer until he invades my space, the air between us thinning. “I could join you two.”

The way he says it… slow, deliberate. My heart skips hard and I glare at him.

“No thanks Jack—”

He shoves me back against the door and I gasp.

“What the hell are you doing?” He dips his head lower and I feel his lips brush my neck, and I inhale sharply.

“You said to try harder—right?” His voice low.

This isn’t right… Jack would never do this… My body reacts anyway, heat pooling low despite my mind screaming at me to stop.

I hear Kai’s footsteps bounding up the stairs before he pounds on the door and I flinch.

Jack moves me aside by my shoulders before opening it.

“A little busy here.” Jack says smoothly.

Kai walks in and gets in his face, and my heart drops. His face is twisted with something feral.

“The hell is going on.”

He looks at me. “Did he hurt you?” His voice tight.

“Why would—”

My words trail off. Why would Jack hurt me?
