Chapter 8 teaser- Kai
We pull into the local bookstore and Calli is glowing, her smile literally lighting up my vision. She hops out without hesitation and runs to the door.
She’s adorable.
I step out of the truck, letting my vow simmer in my mind. I open the door to see Calli looking around as if she’s confused.
“You lost pretty girl?”
“Yea actually. I’m looking for something stalkerish.”
“Oh so that’s what you’re into? No wonder you fell for me so easily.” I bite my lip and smile down at her as she squints and sticks her tongue out at me.
Leaning down I whisper in her ear “Do that again and I’ll be sure to put that tongue to use.”
She pushes me away from her as a girl in all black turns the corner. Her hair stands out with bright pink and blue dye in the front. Calli tries to play it cool by picking up a book and reading the back.
“That one is so good!” The girl says to Calli.
“Yea?”
“Oh yea, had me at chapter one.” The girl smiles as Calli flips the book, looking at the front. It has a massive spider on the front.
Gross.
“Thanks, I’ll get it.” Calli grins with her teeth, reaching her hand out. “I’m Callisto”
The girl reaches out shaking Calli’s hand. “Jocelyn.”
Calli turns smiling and looks over to me excitedly, “I’m ready!” She turns. “Thank you! Happy reading!”
I smile, taking her hand in mine as we walk to the front of the store and check out. I walk around to the passenger side of the truck and open the door for her.
“Would you like to go to the park?” I ask.
“Sure, that actually sounds nice. There’s a beautiful path that we can walk.”
“Alright, we have our heading.” I say shutting the door, making my way to the drivers side.
“Was that a Pirates reference?” She asks, raising a brow.
“I was bored after you fell asleep, Jack just put something on. I liked it.” I reply and she laughs.
The engine roars to life as I turn the key, backing out of the parking spot and drive in the direction of the park down the road. I see in the corner of my eye Calli pulling the book out and opening the book to the first page. I reach my hand over and massage the back of her neck. My fingers lace through her dark brown hair as I see the road I need to pull on to.
I drive for about a mile into the nature preserve, finally find a decent spot of gravel to park on damn near in the middle of the woods.
I park and look around for a pathway. We both hop out and Calli comes around to clasp her fingers in mine. I’ve never seen her like this. So carefree, and happy.
“Thank you for this.” She gazes up at me. “You’re kind of amazing, you know that?”
“I wouldn’t go that far sweetheart. How do you know I didn’t bring you out here to take advantage of you?” I say in a serious tone.
“I don’t think I would mind.” She looks at me smiling, with an expression I can only describe as… Trust.
I pause. My chest beginning to feel heavy.
Gods, I love her.
I fucking love her.
Fuck the cult, fuck Alok, and fuck the rules. No one will take that smile from her face, no one will hurt her, not while I exist. She snaps me out of my thoughts when she jerks my hand.
“This way! I know a spot.” She pulls me towards the direction of the trees off the path.
“How the hell do you know a spot, we’re in the middle of nowhere.”
She doesn’t answer, but it dawned on me that she most likely came here with Jack. But right now I don’t give a fuck. She’s here, with me.
And Jack is stuffed away in his own head. He’s no threat.
I watch the back of her head, too stunned to protest even if I wanted to.
I’m so fucked.
She guides me into a small unmarked path we walk for about a half mile just taking everything in when water comes into my line of sight.
“Pretty, though we seem to be quite a bit of ways off the path.”
“Yea, so?” She laughs. “It’s beautiful here.” She looks out to the water.
“Yea, it is.” I lock in on her and begin to slowly circle. “Good place to get lost too.” I looked down at her like a mischievous smile.
“Don’t look at me like that.” She says with a flat tone.
“Like what?”
“Like I’m something to eat.” She raised a brow.
“Oh but you are.” I slowly approach her, she looks up at me.
“I’m not.” She says with a bravado in her tone.
“You are what I say you are, and right now pretty girl… You look like a snack.” I smirk at her and tilt my head. “Run.”
